Network Management: Basics

For us to take maximum advantage of our all too limited resources, we must take proactive steps in managing our networks. We must make sure that initial designs are both operational and flexible... that our equipment is reliable, yet easily maintained when necessary... that our institutional software applications are effective... and that organizational issues are clear.

Ken Klingenstein, the Director of Computing and Network Services at the University of Colorado at Boulder, will discuss these issues and provide some valuable guidelines. As a Vice President of Farnet, Chair of both the Federal Networking Council Advisory Committee and the CAUSE Board, he is uniquely qualified to present the essential basics of network management. The Boulder campus is home to several state and regional network management centers and was the first campus to connect to the vBNS (NSF-sponsored very-high speed Backbone Network Service).
