How do I get louder audio playback?

Windows 95 has a Control Panel entitled Multimedia where you can change the audio playback volume. The Macintosh OS has a Control Panel under various titles, with the word "Sound" in it, that performs the same function.

Even with these controls at full volume the sound level may still be modest. The small built-in speakers and amplifiers in many computers limit the output. One option is to use a pair of lightweight headphones or "ear buds" such as the ones that come with portable tape or CD players.

Another option is to use external amplified speakers with the computer. This is the normal setup for a computer being used with multimedia materials. These speakers have the advantage of having a volume control, which allows you to adjust the volume during playback.
