Why was RealMedia used?

We designed the CREN Virtual Seminars as a browser/HTML-based application. This will allow for migration to on-line usage in the future. We also are supporting both Macintosh and Windows95 systems.

The technology which allows video to play back through a browser window as part of an HTML document is new, and during the development of the CREN Virtual Seminars we worked with several vendors who are developing such technology. To date, only RealMedia from Progressive Networks has met our design criteria of cross-platform playback with synchronized events.

What video compression schemes were used for optimum, low data rate play back?
