Why was RealMedia used?

What video compression schemes were used for optimum, low data rate play back?

The video in this program is encoded in the RealMedia format. RealMedia is optimized for very low data rates, and because the RealMedia video decompressor is very CPU intensive, the video is highly compressed.

Although CD-ROMs offer higher data rates, the processors in todays desktop computers are unable to decode real media video at those higher rates.

200Mhz Pentium Pro and PPC 604e systems are able to decompress the video on this disc while also loading HTML pages. We have also included a lower data rate video option, as well as an audio-only option for lower end systems.
