Campus Communication Strategies - Seminar Detail Campus Communication Strategies - Topic Overview |
What is the recommended computer system to run the CREN Virtual Seminars? How can this Virtual Seminar be viewed on a slower system? What software do I need to run this application? How do I get louder audio playback? How do I navigate in a presentation? Many people will prefer to start using the CD-ROM and will learn by experimenting, clicking on whatever seems interesting or whenever the pointing hand indicates a "clickable" area. This is a perfectly acceptable way to use the CD-ROM. However, you may also benefit from a more deliberate explanation of how to navigate the within a presentation; this is provided below. One means of navigation is the Table of Contents, which is in the lower left-hand frame of the presentation window. It lists the major Content Headers of the presentation. Normally a presentation starts automatically and runs from beginning to end. However, clicking on any of the Content Headers causes the presentation to go directly to that section of the presentation and begin playback. During playback the Content Header of the current section is scrolled to the top of the Table of Contents frame, informing you of where you are in the presentation. Another means of navigation is the Control Panel, which occupies the lower right-hand frame of the presentation window. Key controls here are Back, "Pause" as indicated by an = symbol, "Play" as indicated by a > symbol, and Next. When beginning a presentation you will automatically be in Play mode. Clicking the Pause button causes playback to do just that. The phrases "Video Paused" or "Audio Paused" will appear in yellow to inform you of that mode. Clicking the Play button will cause the presentation to resume from the beginning of the current Content Header (not from the exact point at which you paused). Clicking the Back button takes you to the previous Content Header as shown in the Table of Contents. If you are in Pause mode when doing that, you will remain in Pause mode. You will see the full graphic or text appropriate to that section in the Graphic frame in the upper right-hand frame of the window. This and the use of the Next button provide a handy way of looking at the full graphics for each item. The Next button operates similarly to the Back button, except it moves ahead to the next item. The References button shows you references appropriate to the presentations and links to additional materials. Of special value is the link to a complete transcript of the presentation, which in turn has clickable links to the Content Headers in the presentation. You may scroll through the references for all the presentations on the disc. At the bottom of the reference frame is a seminar button to return to the presentation, or you make click on the Play button or on the item in the Table of Contents to return to the presentation. The Glossary button takes you to a list of terms with brief descriptions of their meaning. You may scroll through the glossary or use the alphabetic index at the bottom of the frame. Returning to the presentation follows the same options as for References. The Seminar Web Site button takes you to the CREN Virtual Seminars web site if your computer is connected to the Internet. The e-mail button provides a list of e-mail addresses for the presenters and CREN. By selecting any one of the addresses, a new window will come up, you will be able to write and send an e-mail message. The Main Menu button takes you to that page, for selection of a different presentation and for accessing further information about the seminar content. Within the Main Menu window you will find the FAQ button which provides access to information about operation and technical aspects of this CD-ROM. Also, the Set-up button takes you to the configuration window for changes in how the presentations play back on your computer. Is there a full-text transcript of each presentation? How can I access specific information in a seminar? How can I take notes within this program? What video compression schemes were used for optimum, low data rate play back? |
